Yes. BricsCAD saves files in standard DWG format, and progeCAD opens DWG natively — no conversion, no import step. If a colleague or client sends you a DWG created in BricsCAD, you open it in progeCAD exactly like any other DWG file. The same is true in reverse: DWGs saved by progeCAD open cleanly in BricsCAD.
progeCAD has always been sold as a perpetual license at a low one-time price — that's the entire business model. BricsCAD switched to a subscription model and has added BIM features that add to its overhead and development costs. progeCAD focuses on what Windows drafters actually use: DWG compatibility, AutoCAD commands, LISP, and solid 2D/3D tools, without the subscription markup.
BricsCAD moved to a subscription-only model. While some older perpetual licenses may still be in circulation, new purchases are annual subscriptions. progeCAD remains a true one-time perpetual license — you buy it once and own that version indefinitely, with no requirement to renew.
BricsCAD was originally developed by Bricsys, which was acquired by Hexagon AB (a Swedish industrial technology conglomerate) in 2018. In most cases, yes. Both BricsCAD and progeCAD support AutoLISP, and routines written to AutoCAD/AutoLISP standards are generally compatible with both. If a routine uses BricsCAD-specific API extensions (BRX), those parts would need adaptation. Standard LISP automation, batch scripts, and productivity routines typically transfer without modification.
If full BIM authoring (parametric walls, roofs, IFC export) is central to your workflow, BricsCAD has more built-in BIM capability than progeCAD's base package. That said, progeCAD Professional supports 3D solid modeling and can be extended with industry-specific add-ons.
